In 1991, based on the Saxon Report’s recommendations, the University of Lowell became UMass Lowell and Southeastern Massachusetts University became UMass Dartmouth, forming the present-day five-campus UMass system. In March of 1989, the Commission published its findings, now known as The Saxon Report, which concluded that the future prosperity of Massachusetts was dependent upon a world-class public research university and called for the formation of a five-campus UMass system. Then, in 1989, a forward-thinking UMass Board of Trustees formed the Commission on the Future of the University to examine and make recommendations on the future role of UMass in the Commonwealth. The university became a multi-campus system when UMass Medical School in Worcester was established in 1962 and UMass Boston soon followed in 1964. In 1932, the Massachusetts Agricultural College became Massachusetts State College, and in 1947, Mass State became the University of Massachusetts. UMass was first established in 1863 as the Massachusetts Agricultural College, located in Amherst, under the Morrill Land-Grant Colleges Act. On Monday, August 18, representatives from UMass Boston will be on island to answer questions about the program, at 56 Centre Street, from 4-6 p.m. D’Aprix is excited that Nantucket now has a participating campus of its own, with the ability to host courses based here in the future. In addition to the full membership, OLLI offers a “Brown Bag” level, which allows members to access one-time presentations on various topics, many of which are offered as video conferences, as well as live in Boston. The fall curriculum includes “Becoming America: 1776-1800,” “Masters of Italy,” “Social and Cultural Aspects of Food & Cuisine,” “On the Home Front: American Society During World War II,” “Shakespeare’s King Lear,” and “You Bet Your Sweet Assets: Economics in a Changing Society,” just to name a few. “As a member of OLLI, they can also take advantage of travel, plays, and things at other campuses.” “We have so many retired community members who want to thrive,” she said. Janelle D’Aprix, Adult Education Coordinator for the Community School, explained that when the school began its partnership with ReMain, the board expressed an interest in lifelong learning. On Nantucket, at the Community School’s downtown facility at 56 Centre Street, upcoming classes, in video conference format, will be beamed in live from Boston, with a classroom camera that provides the ability to interact with the instructors. The Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) at the University of Massachusetts Boston is membership based, and provides non-credit courses, lectures, social events, theatre, and travel in the U.S., and abroad, to its community of mature learners.
